Memes have been an essential part of our lives and especially the millennial audience as it is an escape for many people from stressful situations and their daily routine. Anyone would prefer a dose of god meme rather than negative and depressing news.
The origin of memes is considered to be from 1921 which had a template similar to Buff (Muscular) dog vs Cheem (small) dog. Since then, there has been a transition multiple times and it will until eternity because majority of meme templates become dead over the time. India was also not behind and especially Jio gave the boom to all creators to upload creative memes on Internet at a very low cost. So, I shall be going deep down into the meme culture of India.
So, widely there are two categories of memes, the ones which became dead after being popular and being overused and the other which stayed underground but are relevant any time to the audience which has seen that meme.
1. Mainstream Indian Memes
These are the memes which are widely known to all and used by majority of meme pages and also used by youtubers in their videos to add humor. The downside of these types of memes is that they get so used over the course of time that they lose their importance and start being just exploited. Popular examples of these memes may be the templates and gifs from the excerpts of Phir Hera Pheri movie (25 din mei paisa double, paisa hi paisa hoga, etc.),
Loose Talk channel (Abee saale),
Frustrated Pakistani fan (Maaro Mujhe Maaro) and many such examples.
There is no harm in using these gifs but you should be creative in using those and add a personal touch which reflects your content but many creators use this as a Segway or a transition to another cutscene in their video which in my opinion does not do justice with the template and also show their lack of creativity.
2. Underrated Indian Memes
These are the memes which did not get a chance to become mainstream but the paradox is that they were funny because they did not become mainstream and did not end up on RVCJ meme page. These types have a very niche audience and mostly they get popular on Reddit. some of these memes are too random and will be quite clueless to normal audience. Nonetheless they are worth mentioning.
The biggest rule of these offbeat memes is that you should forget context in these.
The first meme which got popular was “Lenovo Ghoda”, when a random user on Reddit posted a picture and then it became viral.
The second meme is “Lol xD mai kaise maan lu?!” This became a trend too and people were fed up because there was no comeback to it but the best comeback was found by someone which was, “Mat Maan.”
The third meme is the “Taxi ka Bhada” meme which is supposedly originated because of character called Sundar who always asks his brother-in-law to pay his taxi fare.
The last meme is the “Aerodynamics of Tanmay Bhat” which may seem a little offbeat and type of body shaming but the Aerodynamics meme was popular earlier and it has been revived by Redditors.
